Q&As
Why did you choose to study in New York?
Studying abroad in New York was the easiest decision I’ve ever made. I loved how every street corner offered a lesson in community. The city is a place perfectly designed to meet every possible interest and passion. Its constant activity and vibrant energy encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, making it a great environment to learn who I truly am and who I want to become.
How did studying away support your academic growth?
New York was the ultimate opportunity to understand a true megacity from the inside out. Instead of just reading about urban studies theories in a textbook, I was actually able to walk outside and connect them directly to real-life experiences in the city every single day.
What did you learn about yourself during your study away experience, especially through any challenges or major cultural adjustments?
Studying away in New York really showed me how resilient and independent I can be. Most importantly, it helped me realize how important and necessary it is to continue to use my education and career to serve underrepresented urban communities.
Briefly describe a typical day and your favorite part of daily life in your program location.
A normal day for me would be to wake up and get ready for my internship. I would typically get out around 5PM, and then i would attend classes to just about 9PM. After, I would go home, eat dinner, do any assignments, and hang out with my friends. My favorite part of the day was working at the NYUL. I enjoyed all of my work for the organization so it made everyday worth looking forward to.
If applicable, how did participating in an internship, volunteership or experiential-based project help you grow professionally? What specific skills did you gain?
My internship gave me a crash course in how the nonprofit world actually functions, teaching me the ins and outs of project management, community advocacy, and partner relations. But the biggest takeaway was definitely the people. I was able to build incredible relationships with established nonprofit professionals and NYC human rights leaders.
What was the most essential item you took with you on the program?
I always brought a book with me no matter where I went in the city. Its perfect for the train rides and parks.
What advice would you give students who are considering studying away?
Study abroad is a great opportunity that everyone should experience at least once. No matter where, just go. All BOSP programs are worth experiencing.
