SINY TBD: Fashion in New York: From Runway to Reality

Main content start

Fashion isn’t just about clothing—it’s a system, a language, a form of power. This course brings students into the heart of New York’s fashion world, one of the industry’s great capitals, for a firsthand look at how it all comes together. Through weekly site visits, they’ll go behind the scenes to see a collection take shape—from the first spark of an idea to the final runway reveal—and the strategic decisions that determine its global impact. Along the way, they’ll develop the tools to analyze a collection, not just for its style but for its deeper meaning. Because fashion, as we know it, wasn’t born just to make people look good. It emerged centuries ago as a reflection of state power and ideology. And today, as the industry reckons with urgent questions of sustainability and diversity, understanding its deeper structures has never been more essential.
